If you have ever been to P.F Changs you more than likely have had their lettuce cups. This is my version of their Chinese lettuce cups, except mine, which are basically way better and prettier.

I generally order Chinese lettuce cups every time I go to a Chinese restaurant. As a matter of fact, I’m obsessed. What’s more, I even order them at Thai restaurants too! (There is certainly lots of cilantro in those ones). Generally, I pretty much over order ALL-THE-TIME. I start with these lettuce cups and then usually order Crispy Orange beef and I inhale the lot of it. Basically I don’t eat for two days after, LOL (just kidding!). I am certainly in love with the sauce that goes into this. Hoisin sauce is almost a must in this dish, although you could use another sticky Asian sauce if you can’t find it. In other words, don’t let that hold you back!

They are super easy and make a particularly quick and healthy weeknight meal. Pick up what you need on your way home, and you can without a doubt have these for dinner tonight. Also, it is always good to do this recipe as you will build your Asian pantry, then you can whip up many dishes on the fly. Surprisingly simple dishes…tasty and quick!

Chinese Lettuce Cups

If you have ever been to P.F Changs you more than likely have had their lettuce cups. This is my version of their Chinese lettuce cups, except mine, which are basically way better and prettier.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

2 tablespoons sesame oil or canola oil

1 pound ground chicken

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 onion, finely chopped

1 teaspoon ginger, minced

1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce, such as sambal or chili flakes

1/2 cup hoisin sauce

2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce

1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar

1 (8-ounce) can whole water chestnuts, drained and chopped

1 cup shredded carrot

2 green onions, thinly sliced

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

cilantro leaves for garnish

1 head butter lettuce

Instructions

  1. Break off the leaves of the head of lettuce and plate on a platter.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon sesame oil in a large skillet over a medium heat. Cook chicken for about 6-8 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
  3. Add remaining oil and cook garlic, onion, ginger for about 3-4 minutes. Stir in cooked chicken and add chili garlic sauce.
  4. Stir in hoisin, soy, vinegar and carrot. Stir to combine until all chicken is coated in the sauce.
  5. Stir in carrot and green onion. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Spoon mixture into lettuce cups and garnish with cilantro leaves.
