Since salted caramel made its grand entrance on to the taste stage, officially becoming a hot flavor around 2008, I have been obsessed with it. Because, I mean, what’s not to love? Salt is a flavor enhancer, so it does nothing but bring out the delicious taste of the caramel. The person who does not simply love the taste of salted caramel is few and far between, so whip this sauce up for any of your dinner parties or gourmet gatherings and it is simply bound to be a hit. This is also a great stocking-filler gift…now don’t say I didn’t give you anything for the holiday season!

Tips for Making this Salted Caramel Sauce

  • I note this in the recipe, but don’t get disheartened when the sugar gets clumpy as you start to melt it. It’s going to do this. Don’t worry, trust, and keep going!
  • Get adventurous with your choice of salt! There are some amazing gourmet salts out there these days, and a good salt really can make all the difference. This Salted Caramel Sauce is a treat, so why not go the extra mile and get a salt that really packs a punch?
  • Once you have made the sauce, keep it refrigerated. When you want to serve it, heat it up. It’ll do just grand in the microwave.

Salted Caramel Sauce

Everyone needs to know how to make a salted caramel sauce. It is a must and it’s oh so easy.

Ingredients

1 cup granulated sugar

7 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon flaky salt, such as Maldon

Instructions

  1. In a dry heavy saucepan over medium heat, heat sugar on its own, until it starts to melt, it will become clumpy at first but keep going, it will melt. It will turn an amber color.
  2. Add the butter and stir to melt and combine. Be careful it may splatter. Whisk together.
  3. Stream in the heavy cream and whisk again to combine. Turn off the heat.
  4. Add salt and let cool for a few minutes before transferring into a jar.
